Blues Recall Cade Fairchild To Replace Suspended Ian Cole

No comments :
When St. Louis Blues defenseman Kris Russell went down with an injury last week, Ian Cole finally was given an opportunity to see regular time in the Blues defensive rotation.

With the opportunity in hand, Cole was playing pretty well.  Then, in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, Cole rocked Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkater with a hit that caught Abdelkater in the jaw. Because the hit caught Abdelkater high and in the head, Cole has been suspended for three games by the NHL for the hit, leaving a gaping hole on the Blues defense.

According to Rob Rains, in order to replace Cole, who was filling in for the injured Russell and Kent Huskins, the Blues have recalled defenseman Cade Fairchild from Peoria.

Fairchild, who is just 22 years of age, made his NHL debut earlier this season in a 2-1 Blues victory over the Washington Capitals on November 29th.  Fairchild has played in 31 games for the Peoria Riverman this season, posting 17 points, including four goals.

Most importantly for Blues fans who are looking for Fairchild to provide a steadying force in front of goalies Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott, Fairchild has posted a plus 21 plus/minus rating this season for Peoria.

Fairchild figures to stick around for the Blues next three games as Cole serves his three game suspension.  Cole will return to the lineup January 10th.
