It was an even bigger surprise that Carpenter was so productive when given a chance to play regularly due to various injuries to other regular players.
So when Carpenter suffered his own injury, an oblique strain on May 23rd, it was a huge blow because Carpenter was so capable of filling a variety of roles.
Good news is in the pipeline for the Cardinals and Carpenter as Matheny told reporters that Carpenter is "real close" to starting a rehab assignment and returning to the Cardinals in his "super utility" role.
Carpenter is hitting .288 on the season with three home runs and 20 RBI's in 39 games played at various positions.
Carpenter's 20 RBI's are still tied for fourth most among National League rookies despite missing so much time with the oblique injury.
