But the Cardinals relievers held their ground the rest of the game and the offense did the rest off of Marlins struggling closer Heath Bell.
Rafael Furcal knocked in two runs with a walk off single in the ninth inning to complete an impressive comeback as the Cardinas defeated the Marlins 3-2 in the last game before the Major League Baseball All-Star game in Kansas City.
The Cardinals ninth inning rally started with an Allen Craig single with one out. Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter followed with a ground rule double, then David Freese walked before catcher Tony Cruz pushed ahead the inning's first run on a sacrifice fly.
Daniel Descalso then walked to load the bases before Furcal came through with the walk-off base hit to win the game.
Rookie starting pitcher Joe Kelly started the game on the hill for the Cardinals and despite being a bit wild, was very effective.
Kelly pitched six strong innings, allowing just two hits, but walked five Marlins hitters. Kelly also struck out five and left the game with the lead before the Cardinals bullpen coughed it up in the seventh inning.
Furcal and Craig each finished the day with two hits a piece and Furcal finished the day with three total RBI's.
Reliever Mitchell Boggs recorded the final out of the top of the ninth inning to pick up the win for the Cardinals who head into the All-Star break with a 46-40 record on the season.
