Lance Berkman feels that return for playoffs is a "long shot"

It has been a very rough 2012 for St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman.  The 36 year old has appeared in just 31 games for the Cardinals this season and has undergone a pair of knee operations.

The switch-hitter with a career 360 home runs is doing everything he can to get healthy and hopefully contribute as a pinch-hitter during the playoffs.

But at this point, it does not look good for Berkman, who told Steve Overbey of MLB.com that getting back on the field for the playoffs likely will not happen.

"It's probably a long shot that I will be playing in the playoffs," he said. "When I physically feel that I can get out there, I'll try to get out there."

"The reality is I've basically missed the entire season.  Even if I were to get back out there physically, you still have the issue of not being game-ready. I don't think it would be fair to the team to be added to the playoff roster and take somebody's spot that could actually help us win."

Berkman was a huge contributor in 2011 for the Cardinals, helping to lead the club to the franchise's eleventh World Series Championship.

While Berkman has been and will be missed on the field during the 2012 post-season, his club house leadership will still be available to the Cardinals.
