St. Louis Blues acquire Jay Bouwmeester from the Calgary Flames

The St. Louis Blues once again strengthened their defense on the left side Monday night by acquiring Jay Bouwmeester from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a 2013 first round draft pick and minor league goalie prospect Reto Barra and defenseman Mark Cundari.

The move is the second in a week for Blues' general manager Doug Armstrong, who brought in Jordan Leopold from the Buffalo Sabres over the weekend. Leopold made his Blues' debut in Monday night's 4-1 road victory over the Minnesota Wild.

The Blues have certainly done a lot to strengthen the defense from the left-side and it looks as though Wade Redden and Kris Russell will be watching a lot of games from the pressbox.

Bouwmeester is a highly paid player and automatically becomes the Blues' highest paid defenseman, for now at least.

Bouwmeester is 29 years old and has appeared in 33 games for the Flames this season and six goals and nine assists on the year.
